Recording Your First Visit: A Complete Guide
This guide covers everything you need to know about recording patient encounters with Scope, from initial setup to best practices for optimal note quality.
Before You Start
Make sure your microphone is working properly:
- Grant microphone permissions when your browser prompts you
- Check that the correct microphone is selected in your device settings
- Look for the audio level indicator to confirm Scope can hear you
Tip: If you previously denied microphone access, click the lock icon in your browser's address bar to change the permission to "Allow."
Starting a Recording
On desktop:
- Click "Home" in the sidebar or the "New" button
- Select a template from the dropdown menu
- Click "Record visit" to begin
On mobile:
- Tap the Home tab at the bottom
- Tap "New Visit"
- Select your template and tap "Record visit"
During the Visit
The audio visualizer confirms Scope is listening. Conduct your visit naturally:
- Speak clearly but don't worry about being "perfect"
- The AI filters out small talk and organizes clinical data automatically
- You can dictate findings directly if the patient isn't present
- There's no time limit - sessions of 60-90+ minutes work well
When finished, click the Stop button. Scope will automatically transcribe the audio and generate a structured note.
Recording Telehealth Visits
On Chrome or Edge desktop, you can capture audio directly from your telehealth platform:
- Open your telehealth platform in a browser tab
- In Scope, click the dropdown arrow next to "Record visit"
- Select "Telehealth sharing"
- Choose the tab running your telehealth call
- Enable "Share tab audio" and click Share
This allows Scope to hear both sides of the conversation clearly, even when using headphones.
Uploading Audio Files
You can also upload pre-recorded audio (telehealth recordings, voice memos, dictations):
- Select your template from the dropdown
- Click the dropdown arrow next to "Record visit"
- Select "Upload audio"
- Choose your file (MP3, M4A, AAC, or WAV up to 250MB)
Uploaded audio is encrypted, used only for generating your notes, and automatically deleted afterward.
Best Practices
- Position your device appropriately: Keep your phone or laptop where it can capture both you and the patient clearly
- Minimize background noise: Close windows, turn off fans, and reduce ambient sounds when possible
- Verbalize key information: Anything you want in the note should be spoken during the visit
- Use dictation for additions: After the patient leaves, dictate any additional observations or plans
Troubleshooting
If recording won't start:
- Check for a permission prompt in your browser's address bar
- Verify microphone permissions are set to "Allow"
- Try refreshing the page and clicking "Record visit" again
- Ensure your microphone is connected and selected in system settings
If audio isn't being detected:
- Check that the correct microphone is selected in Scope's settings
- Look for the audio level indicator - it should respond when you speak
- Try a different microphone if available
- On macOS: Check System Settings → Sound → Input
- On Windows: Check Settings → System → Sound → Input
